Undaunted Trailblazers: Minority Women Leaders for Oral Health
Undaunted Trailblazers: Minority Women Leaders for Oral Health, is a compelling read for men and women and a useful leadership training resource to be shared with educators, mentors, human resources personnel and healthcare executives among others. Packed with authenticity and realism, this book relates, in their own voices, the untold stories and experiences of thirty-one contemporary minority women leaders who have succeeded in a male-dominated profession and advanced oral health for the well-being of generations. This is not a coffee-table book. It is from the heart and souls of minority women leaders who found a way through perseverance when there was no way for them. The book presents poignant aspects of their personal and professional journeys and captures challenges faced and surmounted to make a lasting impact. Their substantive accounts, retrieved through “reflective contemplation”, constitute a timeless template for emerging leaders to follow, highlighting the importance of mentoring in career progression and achievement. These courageous oral health pioneers have “disrupted the norm” with resilience, patience and persistence. The candid testimonies will motivate aspiring leaders and will enlighten those who have the power and capacity to help minority women push beyond the glass ceiling to the upper echelon of leadership in any organization.

SAID Announces 2021-23 Board of Directors, First Executive Director

SAID Announces 2021-23 Board of Directors, First Executive Director

The Society of American Indian Dentists (SAID) announces their 2021-23 Board of Directors.  This year, the board expands to nine voting members including, for the first time ever, a student dentist.  Additionally, SAID hired its first Executive Director to mobilize the organization’s efforts to reach the goals of increasing its membership and furthering the collaborative efforts of the organization.

SAID’s newly elected President, Dr. Felicia Fontenot said, “I am extremely humbled to carry the torch of the SAID Presidency.  I will continue to advocate for resources and actions that will help increase the number of Native Americans in our profession of dentistry. In my actions as the first Mescalero Apache dentist, and as a female dentist I have had to become comfortable with the discomfort of being the only person like me in the room.  But I will not be comfortable with the current status of our representation in this field. I am committed to action and not undecided in where I stand in my response to systemic racism and other barriers that prevent our people from becoming dentists, and bar our communities from obtaining the oral health care they need.”

2021-2023 Board of Directors

·       Felicia Fontenot, D.D.S, (Mescalero Apache) - President

·       Cristin Haase, D.M.D., M.P.H. (Cheyenne River Sioux) - Vice President

·       Adrian Sandoval, D.D.S. (Navajo) - Secretary

·       Frederick John, D.M.D. (Pyramid Lake Paiute) - Treasurer and Immediate Past President

·       George Blue Spruce, Jr., D.D.S., M.P.H., Pueblo (Laguna/Ohkay-Owingeh) – President Emeritus and Founder

·       Jessica Bremerman, D.D.S. (Yakama Nation) - At-Large Board Member

·       Seth Brooks, D.D.S. (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma) - At-Large Board Member

·       Tommie Chavis II, Student Dentist (Lumbee) - At-Large Board Member

·       Jessica A. Rickert, D.D.S. (Anishinaabe) - At-Large Board Member

·       Jerry Snell, D.D.S. (Cherokee) - At-Large Board Member

As the first Student Dentist of the SAID Board, Student Dr. Tommie Chavis II represents 30+ SAID student members.  He states, “I am very excited to be taking on the role of student member on the SAID board to represent all American Indian dental and pre-dental students as well as working to increase dental school access for American Indian people.” Student Dr. Chavis recently wrote about his own experience getting into dental school here, https://wp.me/pc2CNJ-1M

Janice Morrow, who has been SAID’s only staff for the last six years, was named SAID’s first Executive Director. She has an extensive career in nonprofit work especially as it relates to AI/AN dentistry. She said, “The mission of SAID has been near and dear to my heart since I started working to promote the importance of oral health to parents of American Indian youth well over 20 years ago. Even then, it was important to me to share with young dental patients receiving care through Tribal/Urban/IHS clinics that they, too, could be a dentist. We have a long way to go but SAID is committed and poised to continue building the pathways.”

Detailed Board of Directors’ bios and photos can be found here, http://www.thesaidonline.org/who-we-are.

SAID is a grassroots organization founded in 1990 by George Blue Spruce Jr., DDS, MPH and five other American Indian dentists. Their original reason for organizing was to work collectively to meet the needs of American Indian dentists, dental students, and dental auxiliaries, improving both the status for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) dentists within the overall profession of dentistry and strengthen the educational pathway for AI/AN students. Today, SAID continues with its original mission. In 2020 and 2021, ten SAID students graduated from dental schools across the country. While SAID is proud to have a continuous increase of American Indian/Alaska Native students joining our organization as pre-dental and dental students, we are dedicated to entering at least one SAID student in each of the 60+ US dental schools annually. Corporate partnerships allow SAID to continue to offer scholarships and programs that benefit NA/AN students in their pursuit of dental careers.

SAID and DentaQuest Partner on DAT Program for Student Success

SAID is partnering with DentaQuest to support a Dental Admission Test (DAT) program designed to prepare our students for a career in dentistry with academic coaching, admission test preparation, and mentoring. The goal is to increase the number of American Indian students successfully enrolled in a U.S. dental college and see success in their first year of academics.

According to the American Dental Education Association, only five of U.S. dental school’s 6,200 first-time enrollees in 2019 were American Indian students. The program will provide the DAT study prep course, testing fees, and travel to approved workshops/conferences for pre-dental students and to the testing location, itself. Moreover, coaching and mentorship opportunities for admissions interviews and support for the transition to dental school are also planned, along with peer-to-peer mentorship opportunities.

“The cost of test prep materials combined with travel to a testing site, plus the cost of the test tend to be barriers for most of our students,” said SAID President Dr. Frederick Jeremy John (Pyramid Lake Paiute). “Anecdotally, we notice our students score much higher on the DAT when they have access to strong prep materials. SAID and DentaQuest believe this program will increase the number of American Indian dental students at the 66 Public, Private and Private/State institutions in the United States.”

“Increasing diversity and opportunity continues to be a foundational challenge in our oral health system,” said Steve Pollock, DentaQuest president and CEO. “In partnering with SAID on this program, we aim to close the diversity and opportunity gap for American Indian students and increase the pipeline of dental professionals in this community. We want to thank SAID for their leadership on this and hope to partner with them for years to come.”

First-time agreement announced between SAID and IHS

December 1, 2020

The Society of American Indian Dentists (SAID) is pleased to announce the establishment of the first-ever formal relationship between SAID and the Indian Health Service (IHS) Division of Oral Health.  A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed in late August by representatives of both parties that formalizes our relationship and commitment to improving the oral health of American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN).

The Indian Health Service, created in 1955, is an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services and is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. The IHS is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for Indian people, and its goal is toraise their health status to the highest possible level. The IHS provides a comprehensive health service delivery system for American Indians and Alaska Natives.  The Division of Oral Health, part of the IHS Office of Clinical and Prevention Services, is responsible for oversight of more than 300 IHS and tribal dental programs in 38 states, programs that provide oral health care for 2.3 million American Indians/Alaska Natives.

The Society of American Indian Dentists (SAID), founded in 1990, is a national, non-profit organization comprised of oral health professionals and students dedicated to promoting and improving the oral health of the American Indian/Alaskan Native community and providing advocacy for the American Indian/Alaskan Native dental professionals across the U.S.

The MOU provides the opportunity for SAID and IHS to collaborate on recruitment of quality oral health professionals to fill critical IHS vacancies across the system, with a focus on recruiting AI/AN dentists.  It also allows SAID and IHS to work together on health promotion/disease prevention activities such as oral health literacy, National Children’s Dental Health Month, the Give Kids A Smile® campaign, and annual IHS oral health initiatives.

We look forward to working with the IHS on these activities and other events like World Oral Health Day, other national dental recognition observances, and Native American Heritage Month.
